Desires tend to be over-specified. Not work that absorbs you, but that particular role at that particular company. Not someone who understands you, but the person who did not call back.
Held that tightly, a want becomes a single door in a long corridor, and everything else along the corridor stops registering as an option at all.
Loosen the specification and the underlying wish is usually still there, now with more ways to be met. What gets called luck often turns out to be exactly this — not delivery from somewhere else, but somebody finally able to see the second and third doors that had been standing open the whole time.
