Every day I exercise compassion through my words and actions.

Almost none of it looks like anything.

It is the tone you keep with the person on the phone queue who cannot help you and knows it. It is not finishing someone's sentence when they are slow getting to the end of it. It is leaving the last message of an argument unsent.

Daily practice of this kind has no highlights. Nobody thanks you for the sharp thing you didn't say, because they never heard it.

Which is probably the test of it. If it can be recounted later, it was partly a performance. The rest just quietly makes the day easier for whoever was standing nearby.
