Helping those less fortunate gives my life greater meaning.

Fortune moves. The person you help this year may have been three good decisions and one piece of bad luck away from your position, and the gap can close in either direction faster than anyone expects.

Which is why the useful kind of helping is horizontal. Sitting down rather than stooping. Asking what somebody wants instead of arriving with what you decided they needed.

Meaning does come out of it, though not from the size of what you gave. What produces it is having been in the room, at eye level, with someone having a hard time.
