Being happy with yourself and being finished with yourself are different states, and only the first one is on offer.
Think of someone who genuinely loves an old house. The windows rattle. The third step creaks and always will. They're not in denial about any of it, and they're also not waiting for the renovation to end before enjoying the place. They live there now.
Contentment doesn't require the list to be empty. It requires the list to stop being a condition of entry. You're allowed to be fond of the version currently in progress, rattling windows included. That isn't settling. It's occupancy.
