Somewhere in most people's accounts there is a payment going out for something nobody has used since 2019 — a magazine, a gym in a town they have left, an app that renews quietly every March.

More money tends to arrive by two routes, and only one of them is dramatic. The other is attention. People who decide they want more of it start reading the statement instead of glancing at the balance, and the reading is what turns up the money that was already there.

Wanting a figure is also different from wanting more. A figure makes you answer differently when somebody asks what you charge.
