Look at how the people closest to you arrived and it is rarely a plan. A shared bus route. A desk allocated by someone in HR who has since left. A queue.

And yet the ones who stayed did not stay by accident. Somebody replied. Somebody suggested a second coffee when the first had been pleasant but not obviously worth repeating.

That second suggestion is the whole thing. It is the difference between people who passed through and people who are still here.

Whoever is currently within reach is the material. Not a lesser substitute for some other set you were meant to have been given.
