The instruction turns up in every tradition, and the reason is not mystical. Breathing is the only autonomic process with a manual override, which makes it the one accessible handle on a nervous system that otherwise does not take requests.
A long out-breath slows the heart within a few beats. What it reaches is the alarm system sitting on top of everything else, which by month four is often carrying as much of the load as the illness is, and which has been waiting for something it can actually be told.
