There's a vending machine tea in a hospital corridor that people remember for years, and it isn't because the tea was any good. It was warm, and it was the only warm thing available.
In the hardest situations the joy on offer shrinks to almost nothing. Almost nothing is not nothing. The scale just changes: a nurse who used your name, a chair by a window, ten minutes outside.
Finding it isn't the same as declaring the situation fine. It's closer to salvage — taking what is genuinely there rather than what ought to be.
