Self-compassion gets misheard as leniency, as though being kind to yourself means letting yourself off things. In practice the harsh internal version produces less. Fear makes people hide errors rather than fix them.

There's a specific test. Take whatever you said to yourself after last week's mistake and imagine saying it, word for word, to a friend who had made the same one. Most people wouldn't get through the opening sentence. The order matters here: not instead of everyone else, but first, so that what you hand out isn't coming from an empty account.
