There's a version of this that goes wrong quietly, and it usually starts with certainty about what somebody else's better looks like.

The reliable kind is narrower and duller. You know how the appeal process works because you went through it. You can read a CV and say which two lines to delete. You know a decent dentist. None of it is transformative and all of it saves somebody a fortnight of confusion.

Improvement nobody asked for tends to arrive as criticism, whatever the intention behind it. Improvement they did ask for is nearly always specific, and nearly always smaller than you expect.
