Most people are carrying a timetable they never consciously agreed to. Married by a certain age. A house by another. Some sense that by now there ought to be a spare room, a title, a settled feeling about money.

Nobody wrote it down and everybody can feel when they are behind on it.

Look closely and much of it belongs to other people — a decade with entirely different economics, a parent's idea of security, a school year group you have not seen in twenty years.

Dropping the schedule is not the same as dropping the wanting. It means the wanting gets to be about the actual life rather than about being on time for it.
