Pushing works because of what surrounds it. Muscle doesn't grow while you lift; it grows afterwards, on the day you did nothing and felt vaguely guilty about it.
Applied to ambition, this gets forgotten constantly. People push for a month, break something, and conclude they aren't built for it.
Schedule the recovery as part of the training, because it is part of the training. Limits extend through a cycle — hard, rest, hard again. Skipping the middle term doesn't accelerate anything.
