Lifeguards teach one counter-intuitive thing about a rip current: do not swim against it. People drown exhausted, twenty metres from a shore they could have reached by going sideways and letting the water carry them out first.
Surrender in that sense is not giving up. It is refusing to spend strength on the single direction that cannot be won, and keeping it for a direction that can. Most weeks contain something like a current. The skill is telling it apart from the things that would move if you pushed.
