Most people carry a private ceiling they have never examined. Ask them to name an amount they would be comfortable earning and there is a figure above which something goes tight — a sense of being conspicuous, of having taken more than the share allotted to someone from a house like theirs.
Nobody issues shares. That ceiling was absorbed, somewhere around the age of nine, from people who were doing their best.
Welcoming means noticing roughly where yours sits, and being curious about it rather than embarrassed that it has a number at all.
