Listen to what comes out of you when you drop something. A jar goes over on the kitchen floor and there is a name you call yourself, automatically, out loud, in a tone you would never use on another adult.
Moments like that are the honest sample. Not the resolutions — the reflex.
You would not keep a friend who spoke to you the way you speak to yourself at eight in the morning. Changing it is not a project with a completion date. It is catching the reflex now and then and finding something plainer to say instead. Missed it, no harm done, fetch the dustpan.
