Enthusiasm gets treated like weather — either it shows up or it doesn't. It behaves much more like a warm-up. Musicians don't wait to feel like playing. They play scales badly for ten minutes and something loosens. The feeling arrives after the motion, not before it.

Confidence works the same way and takes longer. It gets built from a record of things you said you would do and then did, most of them small enough that nobody noticed.
