When a friend's business does well, something small and unattractive can move in the chest. Not resentment exactly. More a sense that a portion has been taken, and that it was yours.

The feeling is close to universal and almost never accurate. Their good year and your flat year are, in nearly every case, two unrelated events that happened to be visible at the same time.

Prosperity isn't rationed by whoever is standing nearest you. Watching someone else's go well is, at minimum, evidence that going well is available.
