Doors get opened by people, and people remember how they were treated when nothing was at stake.

A site foreman who has been talked to properly on smoke breaks mentions a job three months before it is advertised. Somebody on a parts desk, spoken to like a person for two years, finds a component the system insists does not exist.

Neither of those is a reward scheme. It is that warmth makes you memorable, and being thought of is most of what an opportunity actually requires.

The doors were always there. What changes is whether anyone on the other side thinks of your name when one comes loose.
