Somebody two years ago filed the paperwork that means you are not in trouble this month. Somebody four years ago sat an exam you now barely think about. Neither got thanked. They were you, and you have already quietly spent what they earned.

The arrangement runs forwards as well. Whoever you are in 2031 is being funded right now, mostly in small unglamorous instalments.

They will not remember this particular week either.

They will just find themselves, one ordinary afternoon, able to do something — and never quite work out who to thank for it.
