A long walk in bad weather gets done by lampposts. You do not think about the four miles. You think about the next pool of light, then the one after that, and the miles get covered by somebody who was never really considering them.
The future is largely handled this way, by people who look from outside as though they are not handling it at all. What is in front of you is not a smaller ambition. It is the only place where any part of the large thing can actually be touched.
