The best cycle paths in a lot of countries are old railway lines. The rails came up. The route stayed useful for something else entirely.
Old habits usually had a job. They soothed something, or saved time once. Releasing one goes better when you know which job you're replacing rather than simply condemning the habit.
New trails are rough by definition. Slower than the road you know, and unmarked. That isn't a sign of a wrong turn. That's what an unworn path feels like underfoot.
