What revenge actually promises is not damage. It is acknowledgement — one moment in which the person finally understands what they did, at the depth you understood it. That moment is rarely on offer. People protect themselves from that knowledge with impressive skill, and plenty go to the grave holding a version of events in which they were the reasonable one.
Waiting for the reckoning keeps you on their timetable. The way out is not a satisfying scene. It is the unremarkable business of building a life that no longer has a slot in it for them.
