There is a way of waiting that quietly costs years. Somebody moves into a flat meant to be temporary and, four years on, has still never hung anything on the walls, because hanging something would mean admitting they live there.
Wanting more does not require treating where you are as a waiting room. Both can run at once — the plan for next year, and a picture actually hung this weekend.
It tends to work better that way, too. Ambition built from somewhere liveable is steadier than ambition built from somewhere you are trying to escape.
