What difficulty adds, more than anything, is range. Before, you could sympathise. Afterwards you can sit in a kitchen with someone at two in the morning and say nothing at all and be genuinely useful, because you know that talking is not what is wanted.
That capacity is not a consolation prize, and it does not have to justify what it cost.
It is only that people who have been through things are frequently the ones others come to. You will notice it happening, probably before you feel finished yourself.
