The useful thing a setback leaves behind is usually smaller and more practical than it sounds — not wisdom, but a piece of local knowledge. The oven runs twenty degrees hot. That client needs everything in writing. This route floods after rain.

Learning of that kind does not repay the cost of the setback, and it is not supposed to. The second attempt simply starts further along than the first one did.
