What gets left out of the telling is the gap. Somebody describes the failed business and the good one that followed as though they were consecutive, when there were nineteen months in between of not knowing whether anything would follow at all.
You may well be in the nineteen months. From inside they don't look like a step; they look like the end of the road, because whatever makes a step a step only becomes visible from further up.
Nothing needs salvaging today. The salvage happens later, usually by accident, usually while you're busy with something else.
