A day gets graded as though it were one object — a good day, a bad day — when it is actually sixteen waking hours that had very little to do with each other.

A morning can be a write-off and the afternoon still be excellent. The two are not legally connected, though it takes a deliberate act to stop the first from annexing the second. Moment to moment means the ruling can be appealed at any point. Eleven o'clock is not bound by nine.

Whatever this morning was, it does not get a vote on tonight.
