For a while it becomes the largest thing in the diary. Appointments written in a different pen. Weeks planned around whether you will be able to eat afterwards. Conversations that open with it before they open with anything else.
That is a strange kind of prominence. Nobody applied for it, and it crowds out things you would much rather have in the foreground.
But forces are not usually the things we would have picked. This one has probably already rearranged what you count as urgent, who you ring first, and how you spend an unexpectedly good afternoon. That rearrangement tends to outlast the reason for it.
