This body arrived without an invoice. It has been running since before you had opinions about it, and will keep going largely without supervision, which makes you closer to a custodian than an owner.

Care and punishment get mixed up early, so that looking after a body can quietly turn into treating it as a fault to be corrected. The two are distinguishable by tone. Care sounds like water, sleep, a walk because the day was long, and stopping when something hurts.

Respect here is mostly consistency at the boring end — attention paid well before anything has gone wrong.
