Brilliant is a loud word. It suggests a room going quiet while you say the smart thing.

Most real brilliance is unwatched — a note in a margin that turns out to be the whole idea, a problem you kept turning over on a walk until it gave. It happens in drafts, not performances.

Driven is quieter still. It's returning to the work more often than is strictly reasonable.

You don't have to feel brilliant today. Go back to it and let it be ordinary.
