The catalogue includes things nobody would choose. Grief, humiliation, the specific dread of waiting on test results. Being human is not a highlight reel, and pretending otherwise makes the gratitude thin.

What's genuinely remarkable is the range. The same creature that can be flattened by a phone call can also be undone, an hour later, by a child mispronouncing a word. The capacity for one is the capacity for the other. You don't get the second by amputating the first.
