Try to remember what the person you sat next to yesterday was wearing. Or what they said in the first ten minutes. Most of it has gone, and not out of rudeness — everybody is running their own broadcast and has limited bandwidth for anyone else's.

The same arithmetic applies in reverse, which is mostly a relief. The thing you said that you have been rerunning since Wednesday did not lodge anywhere. It was heard, filed under nothing much, and lost by dinner.

What people do retain is oddly specific and rarely what you would predict: that you remembered a name, that you turned up when it rained.
