I am independent and self-sufficient

Self-sufficiency gets confused with doing everything alone. The more useful version is knowing your own arrangements — where the stopcock is, what the rent actually costs, which of your friends would drive at midnight and which would be mortified to be asked.

Independence is having that information, not having no need of anyone.

Somebody who can name three people they could call at short notice is considerably more independent than somebody who has decided never to call anybody.
