An old knee injury still aches before rain twenty years on, and the person it belongs to doesn't think of themselves as injured. It is information now, arriving occasionally, costing almost nothing.
Heartache tends to end up in that category rather than disappearing outright. It shrinks to a weather report. And there is a reason not to want it gone completely: the ache is the receipt for having cared about somebody without holding back, and most people, offered a version of themselves that never felt it, would decline.
