Romance requires a tolerance for looking slightly foolish. That is the real barrier for most adults. Not opportunity, but the fear of being the one who took it seriously. Cynicism is cheap protection: it costs nothing to roll your eyes at a candle, and it guarantees you will never be seen wanting something.

Being open here means being willing to be the person who made an effort that wasn't matched, occasionally, and to survive that. The alternative is a life arranged so carefully that nothing embarrassing and nothing wonderful can happen inside it.
