Not giving up and refusing to leave are different things, and anyone deep in a hard year confuses them constantly. You can end something and remain entirely loyal to the possibility. What gets given up on, usually, isn't love. It is the exposure. After enough disappointment the wanting doesn't stop; the applying does. From outside that looks like indifference, and it isn't.
The stubborn version keeps the possibility open without standing guard over it. Ordinary life, full evenings, and a quiet refusal to conclude that the entire category is closed on the evidence of a few bad results.
