Most long stories have a character who was essential in chapter two and has been hanging around ever since with nothing to do.
Fear was essential once. It got you through a household, a job, a stretch where vigilance was genuinely the right call. It earned its place, which is exactly why it's so difficult to write out now.
A new story doesn't require pretending the old one never happened. It requires deciding what the next part is about, and giving that more room than the caution that used to keep you safe. You're holding the pen. Fear gets a mention. It doesn't get the plot.
