There is a gap of about four seconds after waking before the inventory starts. Then the body reports in, and the day gets graded before your feet touch the floor.
Hope does not really live in that gap. It arrives afterwards, and it behaves more like a decision about what to do with the report than a feeling about it.
Which is why it survives bad mornings. The grading can come back poor and you can still put your feet on the floor, which is the entire practical content of optimism at that hour.
