A crude measurement is available about twenty minutes after leaving someone: heavier or lighter.
It is blunter than it ought to be and more accurate than most of the reasoning that surrounds it. People are frequently kept for years on the strength of history, proximity or guilt, and the twenty-minute reading was there the whole time.
This is not a licence to cull anybody having a hard year — the reading is about a pattern, not an evening. But attention to it slowly changes who gets a third invitation, and who gets a third invitation is most of what the shape of a life turns out to be.
