Watch the small flinch when a card comes out — the half-apology, the joke about being broke made by someone who isn't. Plenty of people earn perfectly well and still handle money the way you would handle something borrowed from a neighbour.
The gladness is a separate acquisition from the amount. It has to be learned on its own, usually late, often by watching somebody who already has it — an uncle who paid for things without performance and without wincing. That posture is available, and it is not downstream of the balance.
