Your nervous system has no way of measuring distance.
A flood four thousand miles away, read about at midnight, produces roughly the chemistry of a flood downstairs. The body gets ready. The alertness has nowhere to go, because there is nothing to lift or run from, so it settles into the room and stays well past the point where the phone is down.
That is not squeamishness, and stepping back from it is not ignorance. There is a difference between being informed, which takes about ten minutes, and being immersed, which takes hours and produces nothing but the readiness.
Get informed in the morning, standing up. It is a different experience from getting immersed at night, lying down.
