Gratitude gets asked to do far too much. Nobody is grateful for the situation, and being told they ought to be is one of the more irritating things people say.
Narrow it right down. Not the year, not the diagnosis, none of the big picture — just whether the bus came on time, or whether one person at a till said something ordinary and kind today.
Noticing that doesn't mean the balance sheet came out positive. It means one line on it did, and reading that line commits you to agreeing with nothing else.
