People who come into a great deal at once tend to describe the first month the same way. Paperwork. Phone calls. A crowd of opinions arriving from relatives who had been quiet for years. Very little of it feels like celebration.
Handling it turns out to need unglamorous skills: saying not yet, telling almost nobody, letting a decision sit a fortnight while everyone wants it made on Tuesday.
Those get practised long before they are needed, on a modest raise or an unexpected refund. Ease at the top is mostly composure rehearsed further down.
