Illness installs a monitor that does not switch off. Part of your attention stays on the body all day, checking, comparing against yesterday, waiting for the twinge to come back.
Which is why relaxing gets harder rather than easier. You can be lying completely still and running surveillance the entire time.
The things that work tend to occupy the monitor rather than ask it to stand down. A film with subtitles. Cooking something with steps in it. Somebody else's problem, described at length.
Not distraction exactly. More like giving the watchman something else to look at for an hour.
