Judgment at midnight is not the same instrument it is at nine in the morning. Same brain, worse conditions: no daylight, no other people, nothing to check anything against, and a body that has been awake for sixteen hours.
Anything that shows up in that window arrives looking enormous and certain. By eight the next day the identical thought is usually a small admin task with a deadline.
It helps to know this in advance, before the room is dark. Not to argue with the three a.m. version, which never works, but to have decided already that it doesn't get a vote until the light is up.
