Most sentences about feelings arrive pre-loaded. You never, rather than I felt. Always, rather than last night. The listener hears the frame before the content and starts building a defence.

Respect in that moment is largely mechanical. Slow the sentence down. Take out the word always. Say the one specific thing instead of the pattern you think it belongs to.

This isn't politeness bought at the cost of honesty. The narrower sentence usually turns out to be the more honest one, and it is the only version with a chance of being heard.
