There is a cot that has been through six households on one street. It goes to whoever is expecting and comes back to nobody, and at this point no one is sure who bought it. It has been more useful in fifteen years than most furniture manages in a lifetime.
Things stagnate when they are owned too carefully. The drill in the garage used nine times. The tent that sleeps four and has slept two. Handing them on isn't generosity exactly — it is closer to putting something back into circulation, where objects do what they were built for instead of waiting in a cupboard for a version of you that isn't coming.
