I give to others openly and gratefully.

There is a habit of shrinking a gift while handing it over. It's nothing. It was going spare anyway. Don't be daft. Half of all generosity is delivered in a mumble with the eyes somewhere else.

The mumble is meant kindly. It is an attempt to spare the other person any sense of debt. What it actually does is make the thing awkward to accept and impossible to thank you for.

Giving openly means letting it be what it is. Handing it over, saying what it is for, and then allowing somebody the ordinary pleasure of being grateful at you.
