The thought is a doorway, and walking through it takes considerably longer than opening it.
Most real changes have a moment you can point to afterward — a decision made in the shower, or on a Sunday evening in a parked car outside your own house. The decision took nine seconds. What followed it took eleven months.
Both halves are true and neither works alone. The thought really is that close, and it really does change the direction of everything after it. It just opens onto a corridor rather than a room.
