Bags get put down more than once. You set them on the step, unlock the door, pick them up again. Nobody carries shopping in from the car in a single clean motion, and nobody lets go of a bad idea about themselves that way either.
The letting go happens repeatedly, in small quantities. The thought arrives, you notice it, you decline the argument, you go back to what you were doing.
